Albuquerque Business Owner Raises Concerns Over Rising Violent Crime

Chase for Business event for small business owners in Miami

A New Mexico business owner is raising concerns about the impact of violent crime on his business and customers in downtown Albuquerque. Manuel Diaz, owner of Diaz Kitchen & Sushi Bar, shared that his establishment has struggled financially due to safety issues in the area. Customers have expressed feeling unsafe, affecting the restaurant's reputation and bottom line.

In recent weeks, downtown Albuquerque has seen a rise in violent incidents, including shootings at the Coronado Mall and in the downtown area. The Albuquerque Police Department has been actively addressing these crimes, as seen in a recent incident where officers pursued a suspected shoplifter on horseback.

Diaz highlighted the challenges faced by businesses, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic. He mentioned that most crimes occur at night and on weekends, often linked to nightlife activities. The restaurant owner emphasized the need for increased safety measures to protect customers and businesses in the area.

Despite efforts by law enforcement, Diaz's restaurant has been a target of violent crimes, with multiple incidents of vandalism and theft. Female customers, in particular, have expressed concerns about their safety when visiting downtown Albuquerque.

Albuquerque Police Chief Harold Medina reassured the community of the department's commitment to addressing crime in the area. He emphasized the focus on Central Ave., targeting drug dealers and illegal firearms to improve safety for residents and businesses.
