Alan Thompson opens up on Celtic exit heartbreak as he makes Neil Lennon admission

Former Celtic winger Alan Thompson admits his departure from the club devastated him, as well as straining his relationship with Neil Lennon.

The Englishman played over 200 games for the club, and later returned to Celtic Park as part of Lennon's coaching staff.

After just two years though he was moved on, and the ex England international admits that wasn't easy to take.

Thompson said: "I was out of work and going through a divorce, which was tough.

"I wouldn't wish it on anyone. I was having a tough time personally and then it was tough after that. I've come through it now and looking forward to the future.

He continued: "Yeah, it wasn't nice. I wasn't happy at all with how it happened, whether it be my fault or other people.

"It was an awful time.

"Well, the club will say they made the right decision but my opinion might be different."

And the Celtic hero admitted his departure affected his friendship with former team-mate Neil Lennon.

"Was there a period where we didn't speak? Yes," Thompson told the BBC's Scottish Football podcast.

"He's got his reasons, I've got mine but absolutely no problem whatsoever now."

There are clearly no residual hard feelings, with Thompson admitting he'd love to return to Celtic, as well as praising Lennon's work.

He said: "To have the influence he's had as a player and a manager, it's not surprising, knowing the character that he is.

"Who knows what happens next season? If they go and do the 10 (league titles in a row) he's up there with Jock Stein and Martin O'Neill in my eyes, but that's another nine or 10 months away.

"He's going to play a massive part in the season, even though he can't get on the pitch. Fingers crossed he can go on and get that magical 10."
