Alan Shearer sends message to Salomon Rondon after Newcastle award win

Alan Shearer has congratulated Salomon Rondon on a 'very good season' after the Venezuelan won Newcastle United's player of the year award.

Rondon has been a big hit on Tyneside since completing his season-long loan move from West Brom in August, scoring 11 goals along the way.

The 29-year-old has slotted into Rafa Benitez's system effortlessly - leading the way with his work rate and effort off the ball - and has also stepped up with seven assists.

Having been directly involved in 47% of Newcastle's Premier League goals this season, it has not come as too much of a surprise to see Rondon voted as the Magpies' player of the year.

The No 9 has become the first forward to lift the gong since Shearer, himself, in 2003 - and the club's all-time top scorer was quick to congratulate him.

'You’ve had a very good season big man. Well done,' he wrote on Twitter.

Rondon's last game of his loan spell will come against Fulham at Craven Cottage on Sunday - and his next move remains up in the air. The striker would like to stay at St James' Park but much depends on parent club West Brom's play-off fate and Benitez's contract situation.

Benitez had to push for Rondon's loan move last summer and the Venezuelan turns 30 in September - which is an issue for the club's hierarchy.
