Alan Shearer says Liverpool game at Anfield was the best atmosphere he has ever experienced

Alan Shearer has paid a glowing tribute to Anfield, revealing he thinks it played host to the best atmosphere he ever experienced at a football match.

The legendary striker won his only Premier League title with Blackburn Rovers at Anfield, but he says the best atmosphere he experienced was as a pundit during Liverpool's famous Champions League comeback against Barcelona in 2018.

Shearer's enthusiastic radio commentary on the night went viral as he hailed the Anfield atmosphere in an incredible game of football and, nearly three years on, he has clearly not forgotten the match.

Speaking on Match of the Day's Top 10 podcast, Shearer said he will always have fond memories of his experiences at Anfield, having first visited the stadium as a child.

He said: "I always think with Anfield, as well, they're a tad more respectful towards you as an opposing player than a lot of other grounds.

"I think they give you a bit more respect, whereas at other grounds I got absolutely battered.

"I only lived 25 minutes away from Anfield when I played at Blackburn - I lived in Formby, which was a great area - and I think the Scousers are very much like the Geordies and Glaswegians as they work hard all week and just want to go and support their team at the weekend.

"It was one of the toughest places to go as they always had such a great team.

"It was also one of the first grounds I went to as a kid, my uncle took me there for an FA Cup game, so I stood on the Kop as an 11-year-old and it was unbelievable.

"I was lucky enough to be at Anfield when Liverpool beat Barcelona a couple of years ago, that comeback. It was the best atmosphere I've ever known in a football stadium - they got the first, then the second, then the third and it was just buzzing.

"It was ridiculous - the atmosphere that night was the best I've ever known."

Reflecting on his experiences of winning the title at Anfield, Shearer explained Reds fans made the occasion even more special due to the fact Kenny Dalglish was manager of Blackburn.

He said: "Good memories, we got beaten on the day but West Ham did us a favour against Man United.

"Great memories of the party we had in the dressing room with champagne and the Liverpool fans, because Kenny was manager of Blackburn.

"He meant so much to the people of Anfield, and rightly so, they gave us a great reception, which was superb for Kenny as well.

"He deserved it as well. Great memories of Anfield."
