Alan Shearer names the Man Utd duo under huge pressure to perform this season

Alan Shearer says Manchester United's failure to replace Romelu Lukaku means Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial are under huge pressure to perform this season.

Lukaku completed a £74million move to Inter Milan on deadline day, putting pen to paper on a five-year deal with the Italian outfit.

The Red Devils were linked with a number of strikers as a possible replacement for the Belgian international, including Juventus forward Paulo Dybala.

In the end United, who had already splashed out on the likes of Daniel James, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Harry Maguire, opted against signing another front man.

The Old Trafford club have a number of talented players capable of leading the line - including both Rashford and Martial.

But Shearer reckons there is a lot of pressure on the young duo to keep firing on all cylinders, and pointed out that one injury could spell disaster for United.

"That has put big pressure on Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial to perform this season - and it's important they avoid any long-term injuries," Shearer wrote in The Sun.

He added: "Martial and Rashford both have to step up.

"However, in Ole they have a manager who knows their position as well as anyone - and he can pass on all of his experience and expertise.

"If he can get an extra ten per cent out of them both, that might just be enough - but it is still a gamble."
