Alan Shearer gives Harry Kane Tottenham transfer advice amid Man United interest

Alan Shearer says he would look to leave Tottenham Hotspur if he was Harry Kane.

The striker's future has been called into question following Spurs' underwhelming season and a Carabao Cup final defeat, with Kane himself recently admitting he was keen to be competing for the biggest prizes in football.

He has been strongly linked to Manchester United as a potential alternative to Erling Haaland, who remains the Reds' main target.

Spurs slumped to a 3-1 defeat to Leeds United on Saturday, which prompted a debate over Kane's future on Match of the Day.

Host Gary Lineker argued that Shearer's loyalty to Newcastle United as a player made him best-placed to understand the quandary Kane finds himself in at his boyhood club.

"Does this sort of lacklustre display make any difference to the sort of decision Harry Kane will have to make at the end of this season?" asked Lineker.

"Put yourself in Harry Kane's shoes - Alan is particularly appropriate because you ended up at Newcastle, although it's a different order and he started at his hometown club, but what do you think?"

Shearer argued that Kane is currently well-placed to leave Spurs should he want an excuse to, due to how far they are from challenging for honours.

The Premier League's record goalscorer admitted that, if he were in Kane's position, he would have to consider his options.

He said: "When I left Blackburn, I had a season after we won the title and we were nowhere near winning the title.

"That sort of made my mind up as I then wanted to go on and try and do things.

"So if Harry wants an excuse, then Tottenham and that team are giving him one because they didn't show up for the cup final and they didn't show up today."

He added: "If I was in his position, I'd go and look elsewhere to try and win trophies."
