Alan Pardew back in football as ex-Newcastle boss takes technical director role

Alan Pardew is back in football, after being named technical director of CSKA Sofia.

The former Newcastle United boss, 59, was last seen on the touchline at Dutch club ADO Den Haag.

The ex-West Ham, Newcastle and West Brom boss cancelled his contract with the club by mutual consent in April, after the covid-19 pandemic curtailed the season in Holland.

Now he is moving upstairs, into his first director of football role.

A statement on the Bulgarian club’s website declared: “Army men, English football specialist Alan Pardew will henceforth be part of the big red family of the Army.

“He will take the position of ‘Technical Director’ and will help with his vast experience and contacts in the overall development of the club and attracting players to the representative team.

“Welcome to the Army, Mr. Alan Pardew!”

The Bulgarian side are competing in this year's Europa League but failed to win in any of their three group stage matches so far.

CSKA host Swiss side Young Boys on Thursday knowing defeat will knock them out of the competition.

The most successful side in the history of Bulgarian football, they finished runners-up in their national league last term, with coach Bruno Akrapovic tasked with leading them to the title this term.

Hristo Stoichkov, the legendary former Barcelona striker, is among the club's shareholders.

Pardew was last seen in the Premier League during a dismal stint at West Brom in 2018, axed after five months following just three wins in 21 games, before the Baggies succumbed to relegation.
