An unfortunate incident occurred at Alabama A&M University on Monday when a student was injured in a shootout with a campus police officer in a dorm stairwell. The shooting took place during a routine security check in the stairwell of a campus residence hall but was quickly contained by authorities.
The university confirmed the incident, stating that the shooting occurred at the Knight Complex on campus, resulting in one injury. The campus police officer, patrolling the fifth floor of the complex, heard gunshots from a lower floor and confronted the student in the stairwell. Multiple shots were exchanged, resulting in the student being struck multiple times. The student was hospitalized, while the campus police officer was unharmed.
Authorities have assured that any immediate threats have been contained as the investigation into the incident continues. Both state and campus authorities have not disclosed further details about the shooting or the individuals involved.
This incident comes as students were returning to the Huntsville campus from spring break, leaving many shocked and concerned. The campus community expressed surprise and disappointment over the violence, with one student stating, 'They shouldn’t be bringing this on campus.'
Notably, this is the second shooting incident at the Knight Complex in just seven months. The previous shooting in August resulted in injuries to two individuals involved in a fight. Police had arrested both suspects in that incident and deemed it an isolated occurrence.
