LUCKNOW: Apparently aimed at Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Lucknow for Amrit Utsav event related to conclave on ‘New Urban India’, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Tuesday questioned the celebrations at a time when people in the state were yet to come to terms with the death of farmers who were mowed down by an SUV belonging to son of Union minister of state for home.
“Uttar Pradesh kisano ki hatyaon ko lekar shokakul hai, ye mahotsav ka samay nahi hai (The state of Uttar Pradesh is mourning the farmers’ death. How can there be a celebration),” Akhilesh tweeted. Attacking the ruling BJP over the death of farmers in Lakhimpur, Akhilesh said Union minister of state for home Ajay Mishra, whose son has been named as a prime accused in the FIR lodged in connection with the killing of the four farmers, should resign. “The car, that mowed down the farmers, belongs to the minister’s son. Till the time he (Ajay Mishra) is a minister will the police dare to enter his house, take his son into custody and question him the way a murder accused should be questioned,” the former UP CM said.
Akhilesh said people are not very hopeful that the families of the slain farmers will be able to get justice under the ruling BJP. But Samajwadi Party will not sit quiet till proper action is initiated against the accused who murdered the farmers in cold blood, he said. Sources said party leadership has asked its district units to be ready for agitations and demonstrations across the state in case the BJP government tries to allow a long rope to the accused.
