Ajax transfer regret outlined amid failed Chelsea deadline day move for £40m star

Wesley Sneijder believes Ajax should have accepted Chelsea's offer to sign Edson Alvarez on deadline day to improve their current squad.

Todd Boehly attempted to bring the Mexican to west London following injuries to N'Golo Kante and Mateo Kovacic in midfield. However, Ajax refused to budge in their stance over the 25-year-old and Denis Zakaria was instead signed from Juventus on a season-long loan.

Fast forward two months and, despite Thomas Tuchel's dismissal, the Blues remain keen on the Ajax star ahead of the January transfer window. Graham Potter has suffered with unfortunate injuries amid a busy schedule this season, leaving him thin on the ground in the middle of the park.

Recent reports have suggested that Chelsea are set to reignite their interest in January, with the player said to be keen on a move to Stamford Bridge. It is likely that Boehly will be forced to pay more than the £40 million offered in the summer, but the American businessman has not shied away from being prized out of moves since taking over the club, evidence coming in Wesley Fofana's move from Leicester City.

After skipping training in an attempt to force a transfer to England, Alvarez has featured 15 times for Alfred Schreuder's men, with de Godenzonen at the top of Eredivisie. However, Sneijder has claimed Ajax could have improved their squad if they had allowed Alvarez to leave.

He said: "If you compare him [Berghuis] to Alvarez, for example... Then I can still play. It plays everything back or everything wide. It's no use to you.

"They should have brought it to London very quickly. You really could have brought back two good, nice players for that. Do you really think he's that special, in big matches?"
