Airdrie taekwondo kid becomes world champion at just nine years old

Airdrie martial arts kid Alisha Burton celebrated becoming a world champion earlier this month.

The nine-year-old won a gold medal for patterns before claiming another gold in sparring at the World International Taekwondo Federation tournament.

After the double she was then handed the overall individual champion trophy for her category and age.

Alisha, who trains at Michael Wiseman’s Airdrie UKTC class and Rivals gym in Wishaw, also won two silver medals at the ICO kickboxing world championships.

She also won two silver medals at the ICO kickboxing world championships (airdrie and coatbridge advertiser)

Alisha is now in the Scotland Squad for both taekwondo and kickboxing.

Mum Helen said: “She has made herself, her parents, her instructors and clubs proud.

“She wore her Saltire with pride winning for her country.

“The funny thing is she still doesn’t really know what she’s achieved but she is a very humble girl - it’s us as parents that always want to shout from the rooftops!

“Alisha proves that if kids have the chance and work hard they can achieve many things.”
