Airdrie star laughs off Partick Thistle manager's red card call as he claims Jags boss is 'always moaning'

Airdrie goalkeeper Max Currie has hit back at claims a red card could have been dished out for a challenge he was involved in during the Diamonds' Scottish Cup fourth round tie against Partick Thistle.

Referee David Munro's decisions were a key talking point as Brian Graham's first half strike sealed progression to the next round for Thistle.

Ian Murray's Airdrie side played well in large spells of the match but couldn't find a decisive goal, disrupting their run of five straight League One wins.

Tunji Akinola was controversially sent off for the home side at Firhill for a last man challenge on Diamonds attacker Jordan Allan, leaving Jags boss Ian McCall gobsmacked.

He was further shocked that nobody was sent packing as Currie, teammate Rhys McCabe and Thistle's Scott Tiffoney collided as the home side looked certain to score again.

McCall said of the incident after Akinola's red card: "I'm not even sure it’s a foul. Compare it to the Scott Tiffoney one – there’s no goalie in and he’s been brought down.

"It’s a straight red card because Tiffoney is going to roll it into an empty net. It was scandalous."

Currie doesn't believe the collision merited a dismissal: "Ian McCall's always moaning. That doesn't surprise me. It was just a coming together of bodies. I thought I could have won it first time.

"Tiffoney takes a good touch past Rhys and I've just kicked the ball away. I didn't touch him.

"It's very sore. Especially after the second half and they got a man sent off. For large parts of the game I didn't think we were far off Thistle. We created good chances in the second half.

"On another day they will go in. I have been busier in games but it's one of those where you might be quiet, but still called upon to make a save.

"I knew at one point I would be called upon but that was in the latter stages of the first half."

Airdrie now focus on their League One promotion push, currently sitting second in the league ahead of facing Clyde on Tuesday.

Currie said: "We came to Thistle to try and win the game. We didn't want to just turn up. We wanted to win. But this won't dent confidence. We put it behind us and move on."
