Airdrie snap up highly-rated Hamilton Accies kid on 'long-term' permanent deal

Airdrie have made their first signing of the January transfer window as left-back Leon McCann signed a permanent deal.

The Hamilton Accies kid has been a standout for the Diamonds on the left-flank as the challenge at the top of League One.

However, he was set to return to New Douglas Park following the end of his loan following the clash with Forfar this weekend.

Director of football Stuart Millar confirmed that the 19-year-old will make the move permanent subject to "the paperwork going through."

He told the : "Everything has been signed and Leon will move here permanently.

"He has done ever so well for us and is a player with huge potential.  His loan agreement was up this Sunday after the game with Forfar but he has come here and played games.

"He is a player who has never played in a competitive game and we have been able to give him 13 games in League One.

"We are thankful to Hamilton for allowing him to come here and he has been well coached at the club. He will sign a long-term deal here so we want him to continue that development here at Airdrie."

However, James Cowan who was on a six-month deal will not be snapped up again.

Following an ankle injury picked up in the defeat to Raith, loanee Charlie Reilly will also be allowed to return to parent club Hamilton Accies to recuperatre.

Millar added: "I have spoken to Charlie and he feels he will take three months to recover so we will allow his loan to come to an end.

"It's a shame for Charlie as we felt he would play a big part in the second half of the season. We think very highly of him and would be glad to have him back at one point.

"With James he was only on a short-term deal. He had certain targets that he had to reach to trigger a new contract and they haven't been reached.

"He is a good lad and we wish him all the best."
