Airdrie new signings unlikely before Dumbarton cup opener but defence key area to strengthen, says No.2 Callum Fordyce

Airdrieonians player/assistant boss Callum Fordyce admits it is unlikely the Diamonds will add to their squad before Saturday's Viaplay League Cup opener with Dumbarton.

But he has revealed talks are ongoing with certain players as they seek to strengthen their defence for the forthcoming season.

The Championship side have made just a handful of new signings this summer, having held on to the bulk of last season's promotion-winning squad.

Striker Nikolay Todorov has joined from Dunfermline, attacking midfielder Elliot Dunlop has arrived following a spell at St Mirren, while Hibs duo Josh O'Connor and Murray Aiken, who play up top and in midfield, respectively, signed on loan at the end of the last campaign for the 2023/24 season.

So Fordyce says there's not a huge rush to add to that right now, but defence is an area where they are a "touch light."

The centre-back said: "We are always looking to strengthen but I don't think anything will happen before the weekend.

"We are kind of focusing on what we've got at the moment for the Dumbarton game.

"Talks are ongoing behind the scenes about certain players among the staff, so there are areas we are looking to strengthen.

"It's just about finding the right calibre of player.

"We are looking to see what fits and make sure we have the right characters in the dressing room, which is a massive thing.

"We've got a good mixture of forward players, a good mixture of midfielders, so the area you would say is a touch light is defence.

"Maybe we need to add a couple of bodies and we are looking to bring players in who can fit our style of play."

Airdrie go into Saturday's clash with the Sons at New Broomfield off the back of a solid pre-season, which included their NL Cup win over Albion Rovers and a 4-2 win against Dungannon Swifts over in Northern Ireland last week.

Fordyce added: "Pre-season has been good but it is still early doors.

"I don't think people realise how quick a turnaround it is for the players [who finished last season at the end of May].

"So it is about managing bodies and putting things into practice now.

"Dumbarton had a good season last year, obviously they just fell short in the play-offs [for League One].

"But they have recruited well so it will be a tough match against a good side."
