Airdrie 1, Clyde 0: Telfer strike gives Airdrie promotion-boosting win

Airdrie's promotion hopes were given a major boost with a slender win over relegation-threatened Clyde at New Broomfield.

Charlie Telfer's third goal of the season gave the Diamonds the lead in 50 minutes, pushing the Diamonds up to third in the League One table.

The first half was pretty even, though Clyde edged it on chances. Kyle Doherty headed narrowly over the bar, while Cameron Salkeld hit the right post.

Airdrie threatened a few times, with Charlie Telfer forcing a save from Neil Parry after Callum Gallagher had blazed a shot over from around 23 yards.

The Diamonds had more about them in the second half and Charlie Telfer scored a great individual goal as he ran through the middle before slamming a shot into the bottom right corner.

Airdrie player-boss Rhys McCabe made one change to the side that beat Alloa 4-0 here seven days ago., with Cammy Ballantyne coming in for Craig Watson.

Clyde boss Jim Duffy made two changes to the side that drew 1-1 against leaders Dunfermline last weekend.. New loan signing Ryan McGeever made his debut, while Darren Hynes also came in, with Brian McLean and Jon Craig dropping out.

Clyde did a bit of early running, and keeper Josh Rae had to rush off his line to boot clear from Kyle Doherty as the former Albion Rovers striker bore down on goal inside the opening two minutes.

The visitors had another chance in three minutes when Ross Cunningham saw a shot well parried by Rae, following good set-up play by Doherty and Martin Rennie. The Diamonds keeper also gathered Cameron Salkeld's rebound effort.

Clyde were in the mood and Kurtis Roberts mugged Charlie Telfer before bearing down on the left, but Cammy Ballantyne got a foot in to divert it for a corner before he could shoot.

The visitors were creating chances and in 23 minutes Salkeld hit the right post with a thunderous shot.

Calum Gallagher tried his luck with a shot from distance two minutes later, but fired just over the bar,

Telfer tried to make something happen for Airdrie in 29 minutes but his low shot was parried and caught by diving Neil Parry.

Clyde should have taken the lead on the half-hour when Doherty headed a Rennie cross just over.

But Airdrie took the lead in 50 minutes when Telfer went on a run through the middle and fired a low shot into the right corner.

Airdrie should have had a penalty in 62 minutes for a push on sub Lewis McGregor, but referee Lloyd Wilson wasn't interested.

Clyde should have levelled shortly after that when Roberts raced down the right and hooked the ball back to Cunningham, but he blasted over.

Doherty had another chance to level for Clyde in 79 minutes but blasted well over from just inside the box.
