Aiden McGeady handed major Hibs injury blow as marquee signing gives Lee Johnson a problem

Aiden McGeady could be out until October after an update emerged on the new Hibs signing's latest injury setback.

Experienced winger McGeady signed up under his former Sunderland boss Lee Johnson after leaving the Black Cats in the summer and was a regular in their ill-fated Premier Sports Cup campaign. But he went off after just 20 minutes of their friendly with Norwich City during the week, sparking fears he could be out for a prolonged spell.

Johnson is already without five players for the Premiership opener with Kevin Nisbet out for the long-term while Paul Hanlon, Demi Mitchell, Lewis Stevenson, and Jake Doyle-Hayes will all miss the clash with St Johnstone. And now the Edinburgh Evening News report McGeady has added his name to that list after aggravating the medial ligament issue that kept him out for more than six months before he joined Hibs in the summer.

Johnson had hoped McGeady wouldn't be out for long but it's believed he could be out now for up to 12 weeks with the knee problem - and may miss the entire first round of league fixtures. It could force the boss back into the transfer market with his squad already looking light.

Johnson said after the Norwich game: "Aiden tried to chop inside, and the guy caught him a little bit on the ankle and he felt the joint open up. Sometimes you can run it off, sometimes it takes four or five days. He felt a sharp pain but hopefully it won’t keep him out."
