AIB scams update: Bank warns of six types of texts that should not be opened

AIB are continuing to warn customers to be on the lookout for scam texts as fraudulent activity continues to plague Irish phone users.

Many people are receiving at least one text or call a day purporting to be from a bank, delivery company or state body.

However, the vast majority of these are fake and are to be avoided.

AIB state on their website: "Fraudsters are targeting customers like you by sending text messages claiming to be AIB and/or other legitimate companies.

"These messages request you to click a link to review or block a fraudulent transaction on your account, or advise that you are locked out of your account. You may also be asked to input codes from your Card Reader or divulge a One Time Passcode (OTP)."

And the bank has released images of six types of scams that their customers are being targeted by, as well as a handy checklist on how to know if it's legitimate or fake.

Guide to avoiding fake AIB texts

  • NEVER disclose your Registration Number or Personal Access Code (PAC) or card information after clicking a link on a text.
  • NEVER generate codes from your AIB Card Reader when they are requested by a text message.
  • NEVER divulge your One Time Passcode (OTP) for Card transactions.
  • NEVER post your card to an address which is provided to you in a text message.
