Adelaide on the ALW attack despite bleak finals outlook

Adelaide United will continue to take attacking risks as they concede their A-League Women finals chances are all but over, coach Adrian Stenta says.

The Reds' finals prospects lay in the mathematical realm ahead of Friday's home encounter against Newcastle.

United (eighth, 17 points) are nine points adrift of fourth-placed Melbourne City and only three games remain before the four-team finals series, while the Jets (10th, 10 points) are out of contention.

"We could possibly, mathematically, but that hasn't been our focus," Stenta told reporters on Thursday.

"We're not really looking at the finals equation because it's not really in our hands.

"So we just set a target for how we want to finish the season and we took a good step forward last week with a win and we will be just going as hard as we can to win the remaining three games."

Adelaide's campaign was cruelled by a horrid stretch of eight winless games featuring five scoreless outings.

"We have gone through a fairly rough patch," Stenta said.

"It wasn't easy because players sometimes struggle to perform and with confidence when things aren't going right."

But the Reds boss used a mini-break to adjust the mindset of his players to a more attacking bent.

"We were able to reset and I think our three games since that break have been really positive ... our focus has been just to play a more attacking brand of football," Stenta said.

"It has been great that we have been able to score six goals in the last three games so we will continue that attacking focus.

"We have tweaked a couple of things tactically but it's more of a mindset.

"We're trying to be a much more dangerous team to play against ... it has meant that we have probably left ourselves a little bit more exposed at times in the defensive end but we are prepared to take that risk."
