SA Health says a 69-year-old man has died from meningococcal disease.

The man from metropolitan Adelaide had been in hospital but died overnight on Wednesday.

SA Health says it has identified multiple people who had close contact with the man and one has been directed to receive clearance antibiotics.

He had the W strain of the disease.

It is the fifth case of meningococcal to be diagnosed in South Australia this year.

Three of those were serotype W and two were serotype B.

Five cases were reported for the whole of 2020 in South Australia.

Meningococcal W has significantly increased in Australia in recent years.

The disease is spread through saliva droplets, so it can be transmitted through kissing, sneezing and coughing, but it is not as infectious as influenzas strains, with prolonged exposure needed to transmit the disease.
