The ACT Ambulance Service has launched a cutting-edge immersive simulation environment to better prepare its paramedics for unpredictable and violent frontline incidents.
The new facility, known as the Blended Learning Interactive Simulation Suite (BLISS), turns a traditional classroom into a 270-degree interactive training space using advanced projection technology.
With floor-to-ceiling visuals projected on walls including interactive and touchscreen environments, the ambulance service introduced BLISS to recreate realistic scenarios paramedics faced daily in a controlled setting.
It comes after ACT Ambulance Service chief officer, David Dutton, revealed 190 incidents in the 2025-2026 financial year where paramedics faced violence on the job.
"That's a couple of instances every two or three days. That is absolutely unacceptable," Mr Dutton said.
In addition to its use for frontline training, BLISS is also expected to support paramedics who are returning to work after a break or injury, by providing a safe environment to rebuild confidence and refresh operational skills.
The dynamic learning experience is designed to help staff grow situational awareness and make decisions, specifically to recognise, assess, and safely respond to aggression before they encounter it in the field.
"BLISS represents a significant advancement in how ACT Ambulance Service delivers education, training and professional development. This capability provides paramedics with realistic learning opportunities that enhance situational preparedness before they encounter similar challenges in the field," Mr Dutton said.
"The goal is simple - reduce harm by preparing our people for challenging situations in a safe and controlled environment."
Minister for Police, Fire and Emergency Services, Dr Marisa Paterson, praised the new initiative and the crucial protection it offers to first responders.
"Our paramedics naturally focus on patient outcomes, but their personal safety is equally important," Dr Paterson said.
"This investment demonstrates the ACT government's commitment to providing paramedics with the training, tools and support they need to stay safe while serving the Canberra community."
