About 170 sheep killed in truck rollover in western Victoria

About 170 sheep have been killed in a rollover west of Melbourne after the driver lost control on a bend on a gravel road.

Police said there were 370 sheep on board when the truck rolled just after 10:00am on Monday on the Pitfield-Scarsdale Road at Piggoreet, south-west of Ballarat.

The driver was uninjured but just under half of the sheep were killed instantly.

The Animal Justice Party's Gary Hall, who lives nearby, said it was distressing to see.

"All the sheep poured out into the embankment and obviously were crushed underneath the truck," he said.

"When I arrived there were bulldozers scooping sheep out of the embankment, it was quite a distressing scene.

"At least the whole top deck of the truck, the sheep on the top deck of the truck were crushed to death."

Police said the remaining sheep were herded into nearby farmyards.

The incident comes a month after a truck carrying thousands of chickens rolled over in North Geelong, killing many of the animals.
