Aberdeen face testing sweat as Derek McInnes and Co await all-clear for St Johnstone trip

Derek McInnes and his players will be granted special dispensation to break the Aberdeen lockdown this weekend - so long as test results prove they are not part of the latest coronavirus cluster.

Record Sport understands dramatic developments at St Andrews House - where the First Minister imposed strict new rules on the Granite City, including a five-mile travel restriction - sparked fears the Dons would be unable to make it to Perth to face St Johnstone on Saturday.

Following urgent discussions between football’s Joint Response Group and the Scottish government, Holyrood officials did give the green light for McInnes and his men to make the trip south for the live TV showdown at lunchtime on Saturday.

But now Aberdeen face a nervous wait before discovering the results of their latest batch of Covid-19 tests as a number of players are thought to have spent time in and around city centre hotspots over the weekend.

A source said: “So long as there is no a major outbreak inside Aberdeen’s own bubble then Saturday’s game in Perth will be good to go.

"Even if there are one or two positive tests this week then, so long as those players go into self-isolation, the rest of the squad can continue to train and play.

“But if there are a larger number of positive results the government’s position could be subject to change.”

Aberdeen’s players reported back
to training on Sunday and have all subsequently undergone swabbing.
