ABC News NT leaves the studio for an outside broadcast in Alice Springs

Presenter Eleni Roussos preparing to go live for the 7pm News special broadcast from Alice Springs.

On the 10th anniversary of the Northern Territory Intervention, on Wednesday June 21, ABC News NT produced a special program examining the impact the emergency response had on Indigenous communities.

The Darwin-based news team hit the road and travelled to Alice Springs to broadcast the special live from Anzac Hill.

A small team was brought together from across the country to produce the outside broadcast, including presenter Eleni Roussos and director Andie Smith from Darwin, cameraman Simon Winter from Melbourne and links operator Ross McLoughlin from Sydney.

Local Alice Springs Chief of Staff Rick Hind coordinated on the ground, alongside local cameraman John Chisolm.

The special was a long time in the making and there was a buzz in the Red Centre.

No one in the Darwin newsroom could ever recall doing a news broadcast from Alice Springs.

Anzac Hill, where the crew set up, drew a small crowd of children from the APY Lands, excited to see how a news bulletin comes together.

Despite the cold, windy evening the backdrop looked stunning and the broadcast went smoothly.

While taking the news on the road can be logistically challenging, it's great to get out of the studio and give regional communities an insight into how the news is produced.
