Aaron Ramsdale tipped to become next Arsenal captain after Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang snub

Former Tottenham ace Darren Bent has called for Aaron Ramsdale to be given the Arsenal captaincy.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was stripped of the role by manager Mikel Arteta on Tuesday after a disciplinary breach.

The Gabon international missed the Gunners 3-0 victory against Southampton on Saturday and will not be part of the squad for Wednesday's Premier League fixture against West Ham.

Kieran Tierney is the favourite to succeed Aubameyang, with Ben White, current vice-captain Alexandre Lacazette and Ramsdale also being considered for the position.

And, despite joining the club only four months ago, Bent believes the latter is the ideal candidate.

"I'd probably say Ramsdale," said the retired striker - who is an Arsenal fan - when asked on talkSPORT.

"If Tierney could guarantee that he’s going to play every single week, then yeah, but other than him it’s got to be Ramsdale as he’s the only player who’s going to play every single week.

"When I think about Arsenal captain, I think Ramsdale has that presence that others don't."

Arteta refused to give much away to the press when speaking about his decision to strip Aubameyang of the captaincy on Tuesday.

"I don't have much more to say, it's a really clear statement from the club," said the manager. "It's a decision we have made following the last incident with the player. This is where we stand."

On his next captain, Arteta added: "Well we have the leadership group and we think that we have different players that are nominated to be captain.

"In the last game it was Laca and we have Granit [Xhaka] as well who has been captain so we will follow that. Obviously, it is a really unpleasant situation and it is not the moment to make any rash decision.

"That leadership group is really strong, it is the one that communicates with myself and the coaching staff and the with the club in a really clear and strong way.

"We are going to continue like that and that is one of the decisions that we made, to make that group a little bit better and try to educate them and try and get the right feedback all the time.

"And build that trust and the strong culture around the club. It is working really well so we will continue to do that."

Arteta's decision to strip Aubameyang of the captaincy was slammed by prominent Arsenal fan and broadcaster Piers Morgan.

"What a jumped-up Pep-light pipsqueak," tweeted Morgan.

"No proper manager would publicly humiliate one of his best players like this - especially when his own performance as manager has been so thoroughly unimpressive."

On when Aubameyang could be reintroduced into the first-team, Arteta said: "We need a bit of time. It needs a bit of time to heal.

"For now he's not involved in the squad. Obviously, it is a really unpleasant situation and it is not the moment to make any rash decision."
