Aaron McEneff joins Hearts as Robbie Neilson swoops for Irish midfielder

Aaron McEneff has sealed a switch to Hearts as they look to strengthen for the Championship title charge.

The Irish midfielder joins from Shamrock Rovers for a fee believed to be around £200k and he'll go straight into Robbie Neilson's squad for a promotion push after signing a two-and-a-half year deal.

He's the second signing of deadline day at Tynecastle after winger Gervane Kastaneer joined on loan from Coventry as a replacement for injury-hit Josh Ginnelly.

McEneff was included in the Republic of Ireland squad earlier this year but never made an appearance for Stephen Kenny's men.

He's impressed in the League of Ireland, though, with 18 goals from midfield in his two seasons at the club.

He started his career at Tottenham before joining hometown club Derry City and spending three years there before moving to Rovers.

He also had spells on trial at St Mirren and Kilmarnock earlier in his career.

Sporting director Joe Savage said: “Aaron is someone that I’ve been looking at for the best part of four years and I’m delighted that we’ve been able to bring him to Hearts.

“He’s been one of Ireland’s standout players for a couple of years now, evidenced by his recent international call up.

“I’m sure the fans are going to be excited by him; he’s really energetic, a box-to-box midfielder who can chip in with goals as well."
