CHANDIGARH: Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring on Wednesday warned the Aam Aadmi Party government against pushing the state into bankruptcy by doling out freebies without financial cushion.
Warring claims that under AAP, the state had the country’s highest debt-to-GSDP ratio of 53.3%. The state Congress president claimed that instead of taking remedial measures, the state government was resorting to “wanton populism” that will bleed the economy further and lead to its collapse. Claiming that the government’s relief efforts lacked intent, he said: “When you know you can’t afford something you promised, you are only cheating people.”
After cautioning the state government that “freebie sprees without financial backup doom the economy”, he cited the example of Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL), which is under a heavy burden of subsidies. “In the name of zero bill, AAP is pushing PSPCL into bankruptcy. They have no backup plan. When this scheme collapses, it will take the state’s economy down with it.”
