A189 Spine Road reopens after emergency services bring distressed man to safety

A major road was brought to a standstill for almost three hours after a man climbed onto the wrong side of the railings on an overpass.

Emergency services were scrambled to a man who was on the wrong side of the railings of the footbridge at High Pit over the A189 Spine Road at around 10am on Monday.

Police closed the Spine Road in both directions from Cramlington to Moor Farm Roundabout with drivers left frustrated at being stranded on bank holiday.

Specialist officers were deployed to speak with the distressed man on the bridge while paramedics were on standby.

Some car passengers left their vehicles due to the scorching conditions with some people spotted taking their dogs for a walk on the carriageway.

The A189 Spine Road was closed for almost three hours before the man was brought to safety and into police care at around 12.45pm.

A Northumbria Police spokesman said: “The Spine Road was closed due a man on the wrong side of the railings of a footbridge that goes over the Spine Road.

“The road was closed for the safety of those vehicles travelling on the road beneath the bridge.

“The man has been brought to the right side of the railings and the Spine Road has now been reopened so traffic should start moving soon.

“The public are thanked for their patience.”
