A1 reopens following serious oil tanker collision in Northumberland which closed road for seven hours

Part of the A1 remained closed for several hours following a serious collision in Northumberland.

Just before 10am on Monday, police received a report of a collision on the A1 northbound near Brownieside involving two cars and an oil tanker.. National Highways confirmed that the road was closed in both directions between the B1340 (near Alnwick) and the A1167 (near Berwick-upon-Tweed).

The road remained closed for several hours following the collision which resulted in large oil spillage. The closure caused major traffic disruption in the area as motorists were urged to avoid the area to ease congestion.

Police officers confirmed that no-one was believed to have sustained any injuries as a result of the crash. The road reopened at around 5pm.

At the time, a spokesperson for the Northumbria Police said: "Shortly before 10am today (Monday) police received a report of a three vehicle collision, involving two cars and an oil tanker, on the A1 northbound near Brownieside.

"Emergency services are in attendance and no-one is believed to have sustained any injuries. The road has been closed in both directions and diversions via Purdy Lodge are in place.

"Motorists are asked to avoid the area at this time to help ease congestion."

On Monday afternoon, a statement from the National Highways read: "This incident has now cleared, and the A1 in Northumberland is now fully open in both directions between the B1340 near Alnwick and the A1167 Berwick-upon-Tweed.

"There are no significant delays in the area. Thanks for your patience this afternoon."
