A1 reopened after person flown to hospital following serious car and lorry crash in Northumberland

The A1 has been reopened after a serious collision near Morpeth.

A person has since been flown to the Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI) in Newcastle following the crash involving a car and lorry on Monday afternoon.

Emergency services scrambled to the scene near Hebron and Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service confirmed they worked to free a male casualty.

The crash happened around 2.30pm between the A697 (Longhorsley turn-off) and Fenrother turn-off. The road was closed from 2.40pm and reopened in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We were called to reports of a road traffic collision on the A1 northbound shortly before 2.30pm this afternoon. We dispatched one ambulance crew and a clinical team leader and requested support from Great North Air Ambulance Service. One patient has been flown to the RVI for further treatment."

A spokeswoman for Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service said: "We received a phone call at 2.34pm from North East Ambulance Service alerting us to a collision on at A1 involving one car and one HGV. We dispatched two appliances from Pegswood and our special rescue unit from West Hartford, one male casualty was released and is now in the hands of the paramedics."

A spokeswoman for the Great North Air Ambulance said: "Our critical care team were activated at 2.39pm to reports of a road traffic collision on the A1 near Hebron. They arrived on scene at 3pm and a doctor and paramedic team are assessing and treating a patient."

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “At 2.30pm today (Monday) we received a report of a collision involving a car and a lorry on the A1 southbound near the A697 Longhorsley turn off.

“Emergency services are currently at the scene. The road has been closed and is likely to remain so for a number of hours. A diversion is currently in place.”

National Highways said: "This is following a serious road traffic collision.

"Emergency services are responding at the scene. National Highways have resources in attendance to assist with traffic management.

"Traffic is being diverted locally. Road users are advised to expect delays on the approach to the incident and allow extra time for their journeys."
