A wind gust pushed a PGA Tour player’s ball into the hole for birdie

Players at The Northern Trust were forced to deal with significant wind gusts Friday afternoon at Liberty National Golf Club in Jersey City, but the tough conditions helped Troy Merritt card one of the wildest birdies of the season.

At the par-5 sixth, Merritt missed his 10-footer for birdie – but as he was walking to go tap in for par, the wind blew his ball back toward the hole and into the cup.

The lucky gust could make a difference by the end of the weekend. Merritt made the turn on Friday at 11-under par for the tournament, in a tie for the lead with Jordan Spieth.
