A townhouse at the former music studios where Sir Elton John recorded Candle in the Wind is for sale for £1.9m

Legend has it that Sir Elton John recorded his mega-hit 1997 version of Candle in the Wind at Townhouse Studios in Shepherd’s Bush immediately after Princess Diana’s funeral.

Although the complex was sold to developers in the years that followed, deep-pocketed buyers now have a chance to snap up a slice of music history.

A four-bedroom townhouse on the site of the former recording studios has gone on the market for £1,895,000 through Dexters.

One of 12 mews homes, the west London home is set over four floors and features four en-suite bedrooms.

A floor-to-ceiling library bookcase sits in the double-height living area, while a suspended wood-and-glass staircase leads to the first floor.

There’s outdoor space in the form of a courtyard garden, or on the fifth-floor roof terrace.

Created by Sir Richard Branson for his Virgin record label in 1978, Townhouse Studios hosted stars including Queen, the Sex Pistols and Robbie Williams.

Townhouse Studios, particularly its Stone Room, was also where the famous drums sound was produced for Phil Collins’ hit In the Air Tonight.

Sir Elton John’s rework of his 1970s song Candle in the Wind — performed live at Princess Diana’s funeral in 1997 — became one of the biggest selling records of all time.

The studios were later bought by EMI in 1992 and sold on to housing provider the Sanctuary Group a decade later. Irish property company Perpetuum took ownership of the complex in 2014.

Designers Granit Architecture + Interiors oversaw the conversion of the former studios into luxury housing.

“A key part of our brief was to design a building that considered the iconic history of the building while creating homes for Londoners,” said the practice. “The townhouses are full of character with some special features making them great places to live.”

Dexters director Georgia Buckley added: “The extraordinary history of this now-modern family home not only adds character and flare, but means you could be sleeping in the same room that the Sex Pistols once performed in.

“With a blend of Victorian and modern properties scattered all over Shepherd’s Bush, the style of Townhouse Mews creates a generous amount of space and is an ideal property for families who want to embrace all the diversity that London has to offer, but with a subtle suburban charm.”
