If you’re really into homewares, fragrance, or are a fan of Mecca, you probably already know about bougie candle and perfume brand Diptyque. So, you probably already know how bloody expensive its products are. Don’t get me wrong, they smell incredible, but $602 for a candle simply isn’t realistic for most of us (yes, they have smaller sizes, but they’re still $100+). So, when a TikToker posted about Kmart and Target selling a Diptyque dupe that’s hundreds of dollars cheaper, you best believe our ears pricked up.
Sydney talent agent and influencer @tahneikajayd took to TikTok to share her find after stumbling across it in her hunt for homewares for her apartment.
The best part? It’s only $18. That’s a hell of a lot cheaper than its high end counterpart.
The official name for the Diptyque dupe is the Anko XL Ceramic Candle, and it looks practically identical to the OG 1.5kg candle. This one weighs 2.1kg, so it’s a bit heavier, but for over $500 cheaper, who cares?
Anko’s version comes in three different scents: Amber Tonka, Vetiver Fig and Blackcurrant Rose. While we haven’t gotten a whiff of them just yet, Tahneika Jayd said in her TikTok that her Amber Tonka candle “smells so good”. As for the OG, it comes in scents including berries, rose, woodfire, amber and fig tree.
Both the original candle and dupe share a similar raised ceramic logo. While Diptyque’s candles spell out each scent, with its signature branding circling it, Anko’s version opts for the scent’s initials. Either way, it’s pretty darn similar — and looks pretty bougie.
One key difference we noticed between the two is that while Diptyque’s 1.5kg candle has five wicks, Anko’s only has two. That may impact how evenly the wax melts as it burns, but is yet to be tested.
While I’ve received a Diptyque candle as a gift in the past and absolutely adored how it smelled, I can’t get past the hefty price tag — especially since it’s made with paraffin wax, the same ingredient that Anko candles are made with. If I’m forking out that much on a candle, I’m expecting soy wax, which burns for longer and produces a stronger scent.
