A third person has tested positive for the coronavirus in the UK

A third person has tested positive for the coronavirus in the UK, the Department of Health has confirmed.

It's not believed that the individual acquired the virus in the UK.

Chief Medical Officer for England, Professor Chris Whitty said: "The patient is being transferred to a specialist NHS centre, and we are using robust infection control measures to prevent any possible further spread of the virus.

"The NHS is well prepared to manage these cases and we are now working quickly to identify any contacts the patient has had."

Two other people were confirmed to have the virus in England on January 31.

The patients, who are members of the same family, have also been receiving specialist care from the NHS.

On Tuesday, the Foreign Office advised all UK citizens to leave China if possible, to minimise the risk of exposure.

Two chartered flights for have brought 94 Britons and their family members back to the UK so far.

They are now in quarantine at Arrowe Park Hospital in Wirral for 14 days to ensure they are not infected.

The coronavirus has infected more than 25,000 people in China - more people than fell ill during the 2002-2003 severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) outbreak.

It's responsible for the death of more than 550 people.

In Europe, more than 25 cases have been reported since the outbreak began in late December.
