A tale of two Stokes

Suzanne Moore, columnist for the Mail on Sunday, formerly of the Guardian, Independent and New Statesman, tweeted this lunchtime that she is to stand as an independent in Hackney North and Stoke Newington, where Diane Abbott is the sitting MP. We should be hearing more on her platform later.

Meanwhile in Stoke-on-Trent Central, the row over the selection of historian (and Guardian contributor) Tristram Hunt to stand for Labour is continuing to roll on. From The Sentinel:

Mick Williams sent an angry email to Prime Minister Gordon Brown and Labour general secretary Ray Collins confirming his resignation after 46 years with the organisation.

The former secretary of the Hartshill and Penkhull Branch Labour Party (BLP) and political education officer for the Stoke-on-Trent Central Constituency Labour Party (CLP) has also vowed to stand in the ward as an independent candidate in the council elections.

Mr Williams's resignation comes just days after CLP secretary Gary Elsby quit to fight against Labour's chosen candidate in the General Election.
