A super snow moon will light up the sky this weekend - and this is the best time to see it

Stargazers are in for a treat this weekend, as we see the arrival of the first super moon of 2020.

The full moon in February will be one of the biggest moons of the year and will look particularly large in the sky when it is rising and setting.

During a supermoon, the moon itself can appear up to 14% bigger and 30% brighter than normal.

The phenomenon happens when the moon is full at the same time as, or very near, perigee - its closest point to Earth on an elliptical, monthly orbit.

And despite its name, the celestial phenomenon isn't an omen for the weather.

In fact, its name derives from northeastern Native American tribes, who referred to the second full moon of midwinter as the Snow Moon because of its timing around traditionally snowy periods.

This moon is significant for reasons in many cultures, according to NASA. The full moon signals the start of Jewish celebrations of Tu BiShvat, known as New Year of the Trees.

This weekend also marks the first full moon of the new Chinese New Year, which signifies the end of Chinese New Year celebrations and the day of the Chinese Lantern festival.

It also coincides with the Buddhist festival of Magha Puja, on February 9, which commemorates a spontaneous gathering of 1,250 of Buddha's followers to hear "The Ovadhapatimokha," an important sermon.

Here in the UK, the Super Snow Moon will only make a brief appearance so those hoping to catch a glimpse of the cosmic event will have to be quick.

The full moon will peak on Sunday morning - February 9, 2020 at about 7.33am GMT.

Which means avid astronomers will have just 20 minutes to see it before the sun rises and it disappears from view.

But if you can't bring yourself to get up that early on a Sunday morning, you won't have long to wait till the next supermoon rises - with the Full Crow Supermoon set to appear on March 9.
