A spot of gallows humour from Michael Grade

With the credit crunch and looming recession dominating the news agenda, there is one thing we could all do with. No, not an offshore bank account or this Saturday's lottery numbers, but a sense of humour. Cut to the Royal Television Society conference in London's Barbican today, where ITV executive chairman Michael Grade was sharing a lift with Channel 4 chief executive Andy Duncan. Like ITV's share price, the lift was going down. "Minus 2," announced the lift's electronic voice. "I wish," joked Grade, perhaps mindful of the "minus 28" decline in the broadcaster's pre-tax profits. Cue much hilarity all round.
