A road has been shut after a 'sinkhole' opened up outside a school in Bolton

A road has been shut after a 'sinkhole' opened up outside a school in Bolton.

Greenroyd Avenue in Breightmet was partially closed near to the entrance to St Catherine's Academy after the hole emerged on Tuesday morning.

Residents say cracks began to show on the road following heavy rain on Sunday.

One said: "It does not look safe, it is like a big pothole."

Pictures from the scene show the collapsed section of road, as well as cracks in the tarmac stretching for several metres.

A plastic barrier has been used to cover the hole.

United Utilities has told Bolton Council that the sink hole opened up after a blockage caused water to shoot up through the tarmac.

Engineers are currently on site carrying out repairs.

A spokesperson for United Utilities said: "Earlier this afternoon we were notified of a possible road collapse on Greenroyd Avenue, Bolton, and have sent our engineers to the site to investigate.

"It's too early to say if it has been caused by a collapsed sewer at this stage but we'll know more once they've completed their survey."
