A new £311m lottery is coming to the UK. Here’s how to play

The world's biggest jackpot game, Powerball, is set to be launched in the UK this week.

The National Lottery's version of the game will see UK players compete with their American counterparts to win shared jackpots potentially worth billions.

Operator Allwyn has confirmed players will be able to buy into the game from tomorrow ahead of the opening draw on Thursday.

What is Powerball?

The game invites players to select five white numbers from 1 to 69, and one red ‘Powerball’ number from 1 to 26. To win the jackpot, players must match all six drawn numbers.

In Powerball, the jackpot grows until it is won, which is what allows the winning sum to reach such high figures.

Powerball created the world's biggest-ever lottery winner of $2.04 billion in 2022 (£1.5bn). Edwin Castro, the winner, bought his ticket in Altadena, California.

Winners can choose to receive their winnings over 30 annual payments, but Castro chose the lump sum, receiving $997.6m (£740m) — or $628.5m (£466m) after taxes.

How will the UK version work?

Here, UK players must pay £4 per line to compete with their American counterparts.

The game will offer players uncapped jackpots starting at £12 million.

The UK game features an extra 'match two main numbers' prize tier, which is only available to UK players and offers a fixed prize of £8.

The 'match five main numbers' tier will also offer a fixed prize of £1 million.

All other UK prize tiers will vary depending on the balls drawn and the number of winners.

What is the current Powerball jackpot?

The Powerball jackpot is currently estimated at $544million (£311million), with a 'cash value' of $241.6million.

The latter is the amount, which you win as a lump sum, which is always lower because it has not been invested to grow over 30 years.

What are the odds of the winning?

The odds of winning the Powerball jackpot are 1 in 292 million, according to the operator.

For the other prize tiers, the odds significantly vary.

What will be the weekly timings?

From tomorrow, tickets will be available to buy online or in UK stores until 11.55pm the night before the draws (on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays).

Draws are then set to take place at around 4am the following morning — on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays — at the Powerball studio in Florida.
