Many might not know, or perhaps have forgotten, that Crash Bandicoot and Spyro now both sit under the Xbox umbrella following Activision’s acquisition a few years ago. While many of us are still hoping to see games from these franchises eventually become available on Game Pass, or at least see more Activision titles added to the service, that may still be quite a long way off if it happens at all.
What I did stumble across online, though, is one absolutely insane fan project that combines both Crash Bandicoot and Spyro into a single game, dubbed “Sprash.”
The fan project, developed by qtderg and Bubaroness, is essentially a combination of two iconic ’90s franchises that were once synonymous with PlayStation and are now owned by Xbox. Powered by Unreal Engine 5, the project aims to recreate Spyro: Year of the Dragon within the engine while also introducing Crash Bandicoot into the experience.
Currently, Sprash is only playable through a demo build, though it already includes three levels: Sunrise Spring Home, Sunny Villa, and Sheila’s Alp. All of them aim to improve upon the original game with higher frame rates, co-op multiplayer, and, of course, the addition of Crash Bandicoot himself.
Believe it or not, I actually used to be quite a big PlayStation fan back in the day, before I gradually lost my love for the brand during the PS4 era. A large part of that came down to not enjoying the output of games in the same way I did when I was younger, because growing up, platformers were a huge part of why I loved PlayStation in the first place.
That means both Crash and Spyro are franchises I look back on with a lot of fond memories, and I’m sure many others do too. So when I came across this project online, I just thought it was genuinely cool and wanted to share it.
You can download the project from here, and I’d love to hear your thoughts on fan projects like this and whether you enjoy them or not. Be sure to leave a comment and take part in our poll.
