'A needless tragedy': NT Police treating woman's death after structure fire in Central Australia as homicide

A woman has died in hospital in Alice Springs after being involved in a structure fire in Hidden Valley town camp.  (ABC News: Rosa Ellen)

Northern Territory Police say they are treating the death of a woman who suffered significant burns in a structure fire on Friday night as a homicide.

Police have launched an investigation into the death of the woman after emergency services were called to the fire at a residence in the Hidden Valley Town Camp, at 11pm on Friday.

In Central Australia, the Hidden Valley Town Camp is on the fringes of Alice Springs.

NT Police say detectives from the Alice Springs Criminal Investigation Branch and investigators from the NT Fire and Rescue Service first suspected the fire was sparked by an alleged domestic violence incident.

The woman was taken to the Alice Springs Hospital with significant burns, and died today.

According to police, the alleged offender is also being treated for significant burns.

“This woman’s death was a needless tragedy," Detective Senior Sergeant Michael Schumacher said.

"Detectives are now treating this domestic violence case as a homicide.”

Police are urging any witnesses to come forward to help with the investigation.
