A Mariners batter accidentally hit an umpire in the face with a glove toss

Keon Broxton’s only hit of the night earned him one of the more comical ejections of the year, as the struggling Mariners outfielder was thrown out of the game after he tossed his battling glove in protest and inadvertently hit umpire Manny Gonzalez in the face.

Broxton, who is batting just .173 for the season in stints with the Mets, Orioles and Mariners, was unhappy with a called strike three that ended the second inning, and he responded by flipping hit bat and his helmet to the ground as he walked away from the plate. Broxton then flung his battling glove over his back shoulder toward the plate – and the glove clipped Gonzalez as it sailed through the air.

Broxton clearly didn’t mean to hit the umpire, but the glove toss earned him an immediate ejection.

Broxton apologized for his actions after the game, and said the incident was a “lesson learned.”
