A livestream from Greenland’s UNESCO-listed Ilulissat Icefjord caught one of nature’s most dramatic tricks: a mammoth iceberg slowly rolling over and exposing the blue underside that had been hidden below the waterline. The moment, filmed off the coast of Ilulissat on July 25, quickly spread online because it was both beautiful and strangely unsettling.

The scale of the scene is part of what made it so striking. Ilulissat sits beside one of the most active glacier systems on Earth, where giant icebergs regularly break off, drift through the fjord and gradually reshape themselves as they melt and fracture in the Arctic water.
What happened
The rollover was captured by a livestream camera near the entrance to Ilulissat Icefjord, with additional footage filmed by local residents. In the video, the iceberg appears to lean slowly before tipping decisively, sending waves across the surrounding water and exposing the rough, darker ice beneath the surface.
