A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has hit a snag during production of its forthcoming second season — because its set is partially underwater.
After Storm Therese brought historic rainfall and flooding to the Canary Islands in Spain last month, HBO’s scheduled shoot of the hit series has been forced to pause due to the area being submerged in water.
Ironically, the Game of Thrones spin-off moved production from Belfast, Northern Ireland, to the sunny Gran Canaria island in order to depict the drought-stricken land described in its source material, The Sworn Sword novella by George R.R. Martin.
Raúl García Brink, the environment councilor of the Gran Canaria Island Council, confirmed that the area near the Presa de Las Niñas reservoir — which overflowed during the storm — had been reserved to shoot the series from February 23 through May 15, according to Collider.
Before the storm, local outlet Diario de Avisos reported that production crews were preparing medieval-style structures with logs and artificial gardens for the set at campsites and recreational areas around the dam.
Brink said the show’s production company will now need to remove the ruined set and complete an environmental cleanup once the water level drops.
Storm Therese was dubbed the region’s worst storm in a decade. A state of emergency was declared across the archipelago and the military was deployed to help with the chaos as neighborhoods were evacuated due to fears over the reservoirs bursting.
It is unclear if the weather delays will impact AKOTSK’s season two release date, which is currently set for 2027. HBO did not immediately return The Independent’s request for comment on the schedule.

The show, which stars Peter Claffey as Ser Duncan the Tall (”Dunc”) and Dexter Sol Ansell as Prince Aegon Targaryen (”Egg”), is set 89 years before the events of GoT, but after its other prequel spin-off, House of the Dragon.
AKOTSK, which The Independent’s Louis Chilton described as an “odd, body fluid-drenched” and “off-beat” prequel in his two-star review — also stars Finn Bennett, Henry Ashton, Tanzyn Crawford and Daniel Ings.
HBO cast Lucy Boynton, Babou Ceesay and Peter Mullan as three major new characters for the show’s second season. However, actor Sam Spruell — who plays Egg’s father Prince Maekar Targaryen — has revealed that he does not expect to return for the forthcoming season.
Production of the forthcoming season started in December 2025 with interior and location shoots in Belfast, meaning the shoot overlapped with the release of the miniseries’ season premiere in January.
