A gunman walked into the crowd of mourners at Clive Pinnock's funeral, fired shots and then was stabbed

A gunman walked into a crowd of mourners during the funeral of a well-known Manchester figure before firing shots - and being stabbed.

Large numbers of friends and family gathered at Gorton Cemetery to pay their final respects to Clive Pinnock, 38, on Thursday (April 23).

The Manchester Evening News has learned a man walked into the crowd and opened fire.

He was then slashed with a knife. The man suffered serious face lacerations, according to sources.

Armed police, in the area at the time, were scrambled to the the cemetery.

It is understood the gunman was disarmed by officers. Police believe their intervention saved his life.

The man was taken to hospital for treatment.

According to police sources, there is evidence three shots were fired.

Nobody has reported being shot to police. The gun has not been found.

Gorton Cemetery, on Woodland Avenue, was taped off by police on Thursday night. A scene remained in place on Friday morning.

Greater Manchester Police has been approached for comment on the latest information surrounding the incident. The force has not offered an updated statement.

Yesterday, GMP said: "Shortly before 7pm on Thursday, police attended Gorton Cemetery on Woodland Avenue, Gorton, following a report of a firearms discharge.

"A man aged 34 was found to have suffered knife wounds and was taken to hospital.

"Enquiries are ongoing."

No arrests have been confirmed by the force.

Mr Pinnock, who grew up on the Anson estate in Longsight, was riding a green Kawasaki motorbike on Hyde Road in Gorton when it was involved in a collision with a BMW on April 8.

He was badly hurt and later died in hospital.

A man was arrested on suspicion of drink driving in connection with the collision.

GMP continue to investigate.

Before Mr Pinnock's funeral took place police said they attended 'several gathering' relating to the ceremony.

A police chief confirmed neighbourhood officers 'engaged' with those present.
