11 Acne Treatments That Actually Work If Your Pimples Are Driving You Mad RN

I swear that the universe knows when I’ve got an important event coming up because the morning of, without fail, I always wake up with a fat pimple that’s akin to a small mountain somewhere on my face. Sure, I may have absolutely devoured a block of chocolate the day prior, but I don’t see why I can’t have clear skin and enjoy the finer things in life, like a Cadbury block of Top Deck. I break out often, so I always have an acne treatment handy in my bathroom cabinet.

Whether it’s your time of the month, you’re breaking out thanks to a bucketload of stress or you’ve got a mysterious pimple, there’s nothing that a pimple treatment can’t fix. And as a fellow acne-prone gal, I’ve tried my fair share of products: the good, the bad and the completely ineffective.

So, if you’re clutching at straws and need your unwanted friend to leave its home on your face, I’ve got you.

Here are 11 pimple treatments that actually work.

The 11 Best Acne Treatments If Your Pimple Won’t Leave You Alone

Skin Control Pimple Patch Mixed AM & PM

I’ve tried a gazillion pimple patches, and these are the best of the best. Specifically the PM patches in this packet. I know there’s a separate packet of dedicated PM patches, and I doubt anything’s different about them, but I swear the ones in the mixed pack are more effective. Take my word for it.

Q+A Activated Charcoal Face Mask

This face mask from Q+A uses charcoal to help draw out excess oil and dirt from our skin, helping to reduce the visibility of pores and achieve an overall clearer complexion.

Garnier Pure Active 8HR Pimple Patch 22 Pack

If you need your pimple patch to put in the work during the day, these Garnier ones are the way to go. They’re super thin, blending into the skin with an almost-invisible finish. They’re great to prevent pimple picking, too.

Indie Lee Overnight Banish Gel

This is a good overnight option if you spy a nasty looking crater on your face before bed. It has kaolin clay and bentonite clay in it (as well as noted pimple predator, salicylic acid) and for some reason, the idea of clay is just so deeply purifying to me, so I’m a sucker for anything with clay as an active ingredient.

Go-To The Removalist Mask

Nothing feels as good as slathering a big thick clay mask all over your face when you have a breakout. This one from Zoe Foster Blake’s skincare brand, Go-To, is an MVP. It won’t dry out your skin, but helps to nuke your zits at the same time — a delicate balance.

Mario Badescu Drying Lotion

The Mario Badescu Drying Lotion is a cult classic and absolute must-have in your pimple-fighting arsenal. It’s a targeted solution that will suck all the gross moisture out of your pimple. Not something you wanna wear out and about necessarily, since it kind of looks like calamine lotion spots all over your face, but it works.

Sunday Riley U.F.O. Ultra-Clarifying Face Oil

Okay hear me out here: I know putting an oil on your acne seems counterproductive, but this one will not clog your pores and create a pimple army. It’s a dry oil, so doesn’t really go on all slick anyway. It also contains our fave salicylic acid as well as noted acne busters tea tree and liquorice.

La Roche-Posay Effaclar Ultra Concentrated Serum

While this bad boy isn’t an overnight miracle worker, take solace in the fact it’s jam-packed with glycolic and salicylic acid, which used to help refine and unclog pores, as well as a hydrating shot of niacinamide. Chuck it on of a night and this serum will work to micro-exfoliate the skin and flush out dead skin cells. Over time, it’s designed to improve the appearance of blemishes and reduce the frequency of ya breakouts.

La Roche-Posay Effaclar Mat Anti-Acne Moisturiser

If the above serum is a little much for your sensitive skin, then give La Roche Posay’s Effaclar Mat Anti-Acne Moisturiser a try. It’s gentle enough to be used every day, and works to prevent and get rid of acne all while moisturising your skin. This is my daily lifesaver.

Medik8 Blemish SOS Rapid Action Target Gel

I’m always sceptical of products that are called something along the lines of “blemish fix” or “rapid action”. That’s because when I was 15, standing in the bathroom simply begging for one of those little bottles to clear my entire face of hormonal, teenage acne, it never worked. Now that I’m an adult, and I realise these products are for those mini breakouts, I’m happy to add them back on my radar. This particular one by Medik8 has been going around a bunch of my social circles thanks to how good it is.

Murad Blemish Control Biome-Balancing Clear & Prevent Blemish Treatment Serum

Acne treatments are all fun and games until they damage your skin barrier. Murad’s Blemish Control Treatment Serum combines salicylic acid, glutamic acid and mandelic acid to clear and smooth skin without disrupting its microbiome.
