To mark the 24th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, commemorative services are being held in the US and all over the world to honour the lives lost during the tragedy.

Over two decades ago, the world watched as four terror attacks were committed against the US, including two hijacked planes crashing into the World Trade Center in New York.

Millions of people will commemorate 9/11 in their own ways, including attending memorial services and participating in volunteer projects.

What time is the minute's silence held?

A memorial service is being held in New York to honour the lives lost during the terror attacks on September 11, 2001.

A minute of silence will be observed six times to correspond with the attacks, beginning at 8.46am EDT (1.46pm UK time), when the first plane struck the North Tower of the World Trade Center.

The others will be at 9.03am, 9.37am, 9.59am, 10.03am and 10.28am, when the attacks on the South Tower and Pentagon took place, as well as to commemorate the plane that crashed in Pennsylvania, and the time each tower fell.

How will the US commemorate 9/11?

Thousands of victims’ relatives, survivors and rescuers usually come to the anniversary ceremony at the World Trade Center in New York.

Vice President JD Vance and his wife, second lady Usha Vance, will attend a ceremony at ground zero in lower Manhattan where family members and loved ones will read aloud the names of the attack victims.

The full list of the names can be found on the memorial's website.

President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump will also be in attendance, they are then anticipated to travel to the Bronx to see the New York Yankees vs Detroit Tigers baseball game on Thursday night.

Additionally, a similar service honouring the victims of Flight 93—the hijacked plane that crashed after crew members and passengers attempted to assault the cockpit—will be held in a rural field close to Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

The ceremony will include minutes of silence, name readings, and wreath laying.Veterans Affairs Secretary Doug Collins will attend that service.
