- Sri Lanka's navy has recovered 87 bodies and rescued 32 people after the U.S. sank an Iranian warship off the coast of Sri Lanka.
- A U.S. military submarine launched a strike on an Iranian warship, the Iris Dena, in international waters off Sri Lanka's coast.
- “The Iranian navy rests at the bottom of the Persian Gulf,” US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said as he showed footage of the attack in the Indian Ocean.
- The Iris Dena, one of Iran's newest warships, was the centrepiece of a two-ship international tour in 2023 that included port calls in countries including South Africa and Brazil, and was accompanied by the support ship IRIS Makran, a converted oil tanker.
- The incident occurred on the fifth day of the US and Israel's conflict with Iran, amid escalating regional tensions and reports of over 1,000 deaths in Iran.
