Waterfront retirement might feel out of reach for retirees on a budget, but there are still places where ocean views or riverside living are affordable.
According to AARP, nearly two-thirds of adults rely substantially on Social Security in retirement. For many, that income, which the SSA estimates at $2,071 on average, might be supplemented with small pension, savings withdrawals, rental income or part-time work.
With that combined, $2,500 a month can go a long way in the right waterfront areas, including the eight locations below.

Gulfport, MS

Sitting on the Mississippi Sound, Gulfport’s climate and white sandy beaches make it an attractive option for retirees looking to live by the water. Housing and living costs are manageable here and it’s also less crowded that many of the other popular coastal retirement spots.

Mobile Bay and its network of rivers, creeks and marinas mean there are plenty of options for waterfront living and there are Gulf beaches within driving distance.
Duluth, MN

Located on Lake Superior, Duluth offers waterfront views and a strong sense of community. Winters may be on the colder side, but for retirees who enjoy four seasons and outdoor living, it offers strong value.
Cape Girardeau, MO

Cape Girardeau offers small-city living by the Mississippi River, with riverfront views, parks and walking paths. Corpus Christi offers a mix of bayfront living and Gulf Coast beaches, working well for retirees who want to retire by the water without necessarily paying resort-town prices.
Eureka, CA

Erie, PA
