As the weather cools and decent fresh produce becomes harder to find, the freezer aisle can be a home cook’s best friend. Frozen foods not only last longer, they can be fresher than produce that travels unprepared, and often cost a fraction of what their fresh counterparts do.

To find out which store gives shoppers more bang for their buck, GoBankingRates compared Walmart’s Great Value line with Aldi’s store-brand equivalents. While Aldi’s freezer section offers more variety, Walmart often undercuts it on price.

1. Frozen Mango Chunks (24-ounce vs. 16-ounce)
- Aldi: $4.35 ($2.90 per pound)
- Walmart: $3.43 (per pound)
Frozen fruit is a smoothie essential and an easy way to add brightness to breakfast. While Walmart’s 16-ounce bag rings up cheaper overall, Aldi’s 24-ounce bag offers a better value per ounce. If you go through fruit quickly, Aldi wins on cost by weight — but if you’re watching your total at checkout, Walmart takes it.

2. Cut Green Beans (10-ounce vs. 12-ounce)
- Aldi: $1.75 ($2.80 per pound)
- Walmart: 98 cents ($1.31 per pound)
At nearly half the price compared to Aldi, Walmart’s frozen green beans are a no-brainer. Whether tossed into a casserole or sautéed with garlic and olive oil, they’re one of the best-value vegetables in the freezer section.

3. Crinkle Cut Fries (32-ounce)
- Aldi: $3.19 ($1.60 per pound)
- Walmart: $2.97 ($1.49 per pound)
Crispy, golden and dependable, crinkle fries are a crowd-pleaser. Walmart’s version edges out Aldi’s by a few cents, proving you don’t have to splurge for the perfect side dish, though it’s not worth a special trip to save a dime.

4. Buttermilk Pancakes (32-ounce vs. 33-ounce)
- Aldi: $3.95 ($1.97 per pound)
- Walmart: $3.74 ($1.81 per pound)
For mornings when you don’t have the patience to blend batter, frozen pancakes are a godsend. Walmart’s pack of 24 fluffy buttermilk pancakes saves you a few dimes compared to Aldi’s (and a lot of cleanup in either case).

5. Vanilla Ice Cream (48-fluid ounce)
- Aldi: $3.25 ($2.17 per quart)
- Walmart: $2.97 ($1.98 per quart)
If you’re just looking for basic vanilla, Walmart wins easily. Its vanilla bean ice cream costs 19 cents less than Aldi’s version: a clear winner. However, both stores offer elevated versions of vanilla ice cream. If we’re looking at Bettergoods — Walmart’s equivalent to Aldi’s premium Sundae Shoppe upgraded version of vanilla) — its $3.44 price tag per pint will cost $6.88 per quart. That leaves Aldi victorious at $6.05 for 48 fluid ounces ($4.03 per quart ). Still, if you aren’t craving the fancy stuff, head to Walmart. At under $3 for a full tub, dessert just became the cheapest part of dinner.

6. Cheese Ravioli (25-ounce)
- Aldi: $4.39 ($2.80 per pound)
- Walmart: $4.27 ($2.73 per pound)
Aldi’s Italian-inspired Priano line has its fans, but Walmart’s cheese ravioli is still the better deal. Pair it with jarred sauce and a sprinkle of parmesan, and dinner’s ready in 10 minutes flat.
