Depending on what side of TikTok you’re on, you probably see at least three girlies a day starting their GRWM videos wearing a peel-off lip stain. While it looks a little chaotic, it’s deeply satisfying to watch, and promises the ultimate lazy-girl dream: a lip look that actually lasts all day with minimal effort and zero re-touching.
The internet is completely obsessed with lining their lips with the bright metallic-purple stuff, letting them dry down, and peeling them off to reveal a perfect, natural-looking tint. While TikTok and Instagram make the trend feel new, the technology behind peel-off lip stains is a direct descendant of South Korean beauty innovations.
Over a decade ago, Korean brands like Berrisom and My Lip Tint Pack (WOW Tint) launched the original peel-off lip stains. They were a huge hit for a while, but never quite made it into Western beauty until 2020. Beauty brand Wonderskin took that original K-Beauty concept and upgraded it into the viral metallic-purple “Wonder Blading” mask you see in every GRWM.
Following that, influencer Sarah Cheung launched her brand, Sacheu Beauty, and the STAY-N lip liner instantly became a must-have. Instead of a full lip, it tapped into the ’90s lip-liner contour trend. It had huge traction on TikTok, but it completely shattered the internet when Billie Eilish revealed that she uses it to prep her lips before going on stage.

Suddenly, it was game over — every brand, from indie startups to global giants like Maybelline, rushed to create their own version. But as with any viral beauty trend, there is a massive gap between TikTok aesthetic and real-life application.
The biggest difference between these peel-off lip stains and your usual liner is that with a liner, you can usually get away with slightly chapped lips. However, lip stains cling to dry skin, so if your lips are even slightly chapped, the pigment settles into those flakes, leaving you with an uneven, patchy liner job.

Plus, you basically wanna have the hands of a surgeon if you’re going to use a stain because if you accidentally overline too far or have a little wobble, you might just be stuck that way for the next eight hours.
The key to nailing it (aside from a steady hand) is prep. We recommend using a lip scrub beforehand to remove any dry flakes and keep the lips and surrounding skin bare before applying the stain, or the formula won’t bond to your skin. That’s why you’ll see all the beauty girlies wearing them at the beginning of their GRWMs before starting their skincare/makeup routines.
Now, as much as these have blown up online, there are still very few on the Australian market. But DW, we’ve done some digging and found where you can get your hands on some of TikTok’s faves, including this viral $8 one from Kmart.
We’ve also spotted this one in our feeds recently from Maybelline. No word yet on when it’s dropping in Australia, but this TikTok has us excited!
